    SPECIAL NEEDS PUPPIES

Hello Pug people another not so cute story.  We got a call from a shelter in Longview Texas that a lady brought in these puppies because they were sick.  That was an understatement.  Both of these guys have scabies and demodex mange.  Jane has a broken leg to boot.  This is not going to be an easy fix and it is going to be a long term project for our volunteers in Longview not to mention the cost factor of medication, surgery, and just routine care that 6 week old puppies need. I know it seems like we are always begging but people we need help with these.  Our club NEVER turns away a Pug in need regardless of age or condition and we are really being tested this year.  Tarzan and Jane are still two happy little Pugs that try to play with each other and yes they have that Pug appetite.  If you can help us with a dollar two that would be great .  If not at least keep these two in your thoughts and we will manage to get them in tip top shape.  Thanks to everyone in advance for your help of cash and thoughts.

  • LuLu Bear

    HELP HELP HELP !!!!!!!!!!!

Over the weekend, we were expecting to pick-up a pug with demodex but we were not prepared for the shocking and heartbreaking condition this baby is in.

Lulu has demodex, a severe skin infection, a staph infection and an ear infection.  Our vet is erring on the side of caution and she is also being treated for both Sarcoptic and Demodectic mange.  She has been hospitalized and will remain there for at least another week. Demodex is relatively easy to diagnose, treat, and not costly unless you let it get to this stage.

LuLu is only 4 months old.  Her former owner told us that although she loves LuLu dearly, she could hardly stand to touch LuLu and that she was feeling sick to her stomach trying to care for her any longer.  Despite the obvious pain that LuLu is experiencing she is still a happy pug and very much a puppy.  She loves treats and craves human attention, sitting sweetly on your foot as you pet her.  She has a very long recovery road ahead of her and her treatment will be costly.  If you can help LuLu and other pugs like her please take a minute to donate.  Every penny helps.

  • Mudbug

Hello everyone my name is Mudbug and I am a senior lady with very limited eye site.  I was wandering around and was nearly hit by a car on the street when a nice person picked me up.  I felt safe but then I ended up in a place called animal control.  I heard them say i had to stay for 72 hours to see if my owner would come and claim me. They never showed up.  this nice guy from DFWPRC came and visited me twice and told me he would be back to get me when my time was up.  True to his word he came at noon and sprung me.  I am now getting checked out by the vet and will have to be fixed.  Not sure about anything else going on with me but I am very scared.  Please consider me and if you can PLEASE send a donation to help them with my medical cost.  Thanks for looking.

    Update MAY 03, 2008

Mudbug is now in a foster home but would love top have a family to dote on her by herself.  It will have to be a special family as she will be classified special needs.  Mudbug needed a dental done and when Dr G got in there he discovered she had only 5 teeth in her entire mouth.  Well, now she has zero.  The five she had were infected and had to be removed.  So Mudbug will have to have a soft diet which she is getting and having no trouble in true Pug fashion of cleaning her bowl.  She also does not seem to have any trouble with a biscuit.  Mudbug has very limited vision and some hearing loss but she is a real cuddlier and gets along well with the 8 Pugs she has been forced to live with.  PLEASE CONSIDER MUDBUG as she deserves to have a family that will make her final years a thing of happiness instead of the obvious abuse she has been threw her previous stops in life.  VOTE MUDBUG!!

  • Maggie

Maggie is a beautiful five-year-old pug that needs your help. Up until last October Maggie was living the good life when she suddenly experienced severe pain and had difficulty walking. Her owner took her to a canine neurologist for an MRI and other diagnostic testing. At that time she was diagnosed with a herniated disc in her back and it was suggested that Maggie undergo surgery. Before that decision could be made, Maggie's owner died suddenly. Within five days of her death, Maggie found herself in rescue; in severe pain, frightened and grieving for her deceased owner. When she came into her foster home, Maggie would not eat or drink and she would not take her pain medication. She laid on and buried her little head in her blankets that smelled of her owner. After several days her foster parents were able to sit on the kitchen floor and feed her chicken and rice.

After ten days in her foster home, Maggie is now eating and drinking and taking her pain medication. She is wagging her little pug tail and trying to play with her foster pug brother and sister. Due to her back, she cannot run, jump or play like a normal dog. She loves to play!! Right now she will play with her toys quietly on her own or will enjoy an easy game of tug. Her rear legs are weak and she waddles when she walks. After consulting with the neurologist that assessed Maggie a couple months ago, DFW Pug Rescue has decided that Maggie needs to have her surgery. She is such a young and sweet girl, she needs every chance to be able to run and play like other dogs!

The surgery must be done soon to be as successful as possible before more damage is done to the compressed nerves caused by the protruding disc. With a significant discount her surgery will still run $2500. We need help to off set this expense. Maggie was very recently someone's treasured pet. I know her owner is looking down on us in rescue now, grateful for any help and comfort we can provide to her beloved Maggie.

    UPDATE 2/20/08
Thank you all for the tremendous outpouring of love and financial support for Maggie. We are nearing out financial goal and are confident we will receive the rest, so Maggie has been scheduled for surgery next week.

Maggie is adjusting to her foster home and is such a sweetheart! I will be posting her post-surgery progress.

It’s true there are no people like pug people! Many, many thanks!

    Maggie’s foster mom

    MAGGIE HAS SURGERY!

2/28/08 Maggie had a lumbar laminectomy this afternoon. She is resting in the recovery room and is sedated. Her foster mom will provide updates on her condition soon.

2/29/08 Maggie was able to have a restful night. She ate some food this morning and has walked on her own. She is still in considerable pain and they are continuing with her IV pain meds. Although the surgery went well, Dr. Ducate was unable to get all of the disc material off of her spinal cord. It was adherent and to prevent further injury and blood loss she made the decision to leave some of the debris behind. She was able to provide a “window” with part of the vertebra being removed to take pressure off the cord. Maggie’s foster mom is preparing an “ultimate crate” for her discharge! More updates will follow.
Thanks you for your continued thoughts and prayers on Maggie’s behalf.

    MAGGIE IS HOME!

3/5/08 Maggie came home from the hospital yesterday and she was so happy!! She is wagging her curly pug tail non-stop. Even though they told us she would be weak in her back legs, she is walking almost, if not as well as she was before surgery. We are optimistic she will continue to improve and her back legs will gradually get even better. She is still in some pain and does not like the crate. Thanks for all the puggie good wishes and we will keep you updated.

    3/20/08 Update
Maggie is now 3 wks post surgery and she is doing great!! She is walking very well with almost no sway or wobbliness in her back legs.  With exercise she will get even stronger.  The results are much better than we had hoped for following surgery. Maggie has been through so much in the last 2 months but she is a happy little girl who is grateful and responds lovingly in her foster home.

  • Mimsi

Look at me!  Look at me!!  My name is Mimsi and I was left at the shelter to be disposed of.  These nice people came right away and retrieved me from the dungeon.  I am about 6-7 yrs old and appear to be in decent health.  I have some sort of mouth issues going on so the Doc will check me all over.  I only weigh about 9-10 pounds but I am jam packed with energy and a strong appetite.  If you think you can give me a second chance with a forever home ask for me.  I have a lot of good years left on these tires and will promise to be a great companion.  PLEEEESE!!

    JANUARY 04, 2008

Just got off the phone with Dr G and found out that little Mimsi had suffered some kind of severe trauma to the face.  Her little jaw is broken, two K-9 teeth are missing and her tongue has been lacerated.  She is between 5-6 yrs old and is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday.  It is not known at this time what the recovery will be so please check back later for more details.  If you would like to make a contribution to help pay for this expensive procedure that Mimsi needs please hit the donate button and designate your donation is for Mimsi. Thanks for helping us help Mimsi.

    UPDATE JANUARY 09, 2008

Mimsi has completed phase one of her surgeries that she will need.  Dr G had to actually recreate her tongue as it was torn worse than he thought.  He thinks by rebuilding the tongue Mimsi will not have any trouble using it.  Her first jaw surgery was also done and two pins were installed to stabilize the jaw.  Mimsi is a real trooper and doing well.  Thanks to all who have sent $$ to help with her bills.  she still has a ways to go but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    UPDATE JANUARY 20, 2008

Hugs and kisses to my loyal fanclub and and everyone who donated money for my surgeries! Thank you so much! I am now at my foster home recuperating! I am having tons of fun and eating well...I love to eat! I get along famously with all my foster siblings. I still have these wires in my mouth to fix my broken jaw. I am told they will come out in mid to late march. I am still a tiny girl, about 10 lbs. I am working on gaining a pound or two...like that's a problem? Bring on the food!  Hey! Hey? Hey! Foster girl....I'm talking to you....Can I get prime rib with bernaise sauce next? I'm Mimsi.....just ask for me on your application.....Oh! Oh! I'd like to sleep in the bed with you or in a fancy one just for me....that would be awesome! Hugs and more kisses......Thank you for considering me! I am most grateful to have my second chance.

    Love, Mimsi

  • Bitsi

"Bitsi has lost her valiant fight."

    BITSI UPDATE JULY 24, 2006

It really saddens me to have to tell everyone that at about 2 PM today Bitsi left us for the bridge. Her little body just could not fight any longer. After ten days of constant around the clock care in one of the best hospitals in the world the end result was not as we had hoped. We gave it a valiant effort and spared no expense in her care thanks to Pug lovers all over the world who dug deep into their pockets and helped Bitsi finance a fight she would lose. While Glynna and I only had Bisti for two months she was a huge part of our Pug family and we loved her as much as we love our own. Thanks to everyone for their prayers, emails and monetary contributions. Bitsi may you rest in peace.

    BITSI UPDATE JULY 18, 2006

Glynna and I just returned from a quick trip (seven hours) to A&M to check up on Bitsi. We did not like the news we got this morning and liked it even less when we got there. Dr. Dinayak is doing everything she can to keep Bitsi alive. She took a turn for the worse at 2 AM, and nearly left us. Bitsi cannot or will not eat. She cannot swallow, and this is great concern. Bitsi has not eaten in six days and she is getting very weak. Dr. Dinayak wants to insert a tube to feed her, but is afraid she will not wake up from the 15 minute procedure. We all decided she must be fed, so I gave the go ahead to try. If this is successful she will be fed this way, at the cost of $200 per meal. We will have exhausted all of our funds that were donated by this time Thursday night. I cannot give up on this little girl, so I guess we are begging again! It may all be for nothing, but at least we are trying. Bitsi is only three years old and if at all possible we will save her. The doctor and I have already agreed that the minute she starts to suffer, then the fight will be over, but until then PLEASE keep Bitsi in your thoughts and prayers. Check back for other updates as they become available.

    BITSI UPDATE JULY 15, 2006

Just got off the phone with our contact at Texas A&M and Bitsi seems to be improving. She is sitting up and is aware of people around her. It also appears that she may be blind and deaf from the seizures. Only time will tell. She is still not eating and she cannot even be considered on the road to recovery until she eats on her own. The doctors say the blindness and deafness may or not be permanent. We will continue to treat her at A&M till they say she can come "home". Check back later for more updates and keep Bitsi in your thoughts.

    BITSI UPDATE JULY 13, 2006

As of this morning Bitsi is holding her own but is far from recovery. She is still in ICU and not out of danger. She has some swelling of the brain but the doctors said that is not of concern at this time. This is a very rare case and the doctors at A&M are very interested in the outcome. We have about two to three days left on the original estimate that we were given so this may cost us more than we originally planned. We as a club may have to dig deeper and do a lot more begging and still the outcome is in doubt. If all of you will keep Bitsi in your thoughts and prayers it has to help WE CANNOT LOSE THIS GIRL. I promised her all was going to be OK and I hate not telling the truth. Check back often as I will update as info becomes available.

    BITSI UPDATE JULY 10, 2006

Just a quick update to let everyone that is interested what is going on with Bitsi. She saw the vets at Texas A&M this morning, July 10, 2006, and is scheduled to have her shunt surgery tomorrow, July 11, 2006, morning. The vet said prognosis is good but will not know for sure until the surgery begins and the actual shunt is located. This is the beginning of a long process that will take a lot of patience to get Bitsi back to normal. She will be transferred back to our home as soon as she is well enough to travel and she will stay here as long as it takes to make sure she is back to health. The vets at A&M were very impressed with the diet and care that Glynna has given her the last two months. I will post more after her surgery and let everyone know what is happening. Stay tuned.

    BITSI UPDATE JUNE 21, 2006

    A HUGE THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because of Pug Lovers all over the world we have reached our goal for Bitsi's surgery. Every $5-$1000 donation was received and Bitsi is turning flips over the love she has been showered with. We have read stories on-line about Pug people pulling together and saving a particular Pug but I never dreamed it would happen to one in our care. Bitsi's surgery has been scheduled at Texas A&M the first part of July. I will continue to post her progress. We are told each particular dog that has this surgery needs different kinds of aftercare so the few donations that came in over our goal will go to pay for that. Any other monies left over will be spent on other Pugs that come into our care. We are getting about 8-10 a week and our vet bills are enormous. So again with all of our hearts we thanks each and every one of you that either sent cash or said a prayer. Check back later for updates on Bitsi's progress.

    BITSI UPDATE JUNE 19, 2006

Because of the generous support of Pug lovers all over the world we are over half way to the needed amount for Bitsi to have her surgery. We are so confident that the donations will continue we are scheduling her surgery at Texas A&M at the first available date. I have always said there is nothing in this world like Pug People and this outpouring of generosity is the proof. We will keep everyone posted on Bitsi and her surgery as it happens.

Thanks from Bitsi to all of you.
Tim & Glynna (Bitsi's foster parents)

    Challenge to all pug lovers!

This is Denise Ruhl from the Austin Pug Club. I gave $100 on the 1st and said to give it to the pug that needs it the most. I hope it went to Bitsi. I'm giving $200 for Bitsi. Also, I will donate $5 for the first 100 people that make a donation for Bitsi from this day onward. I'll say a prayer for Bitsi. Thank You, Denise and Kim Ruhl

    EMERGENCY HELP NEEDED NOW!!

OK Pug People if I have to beg then I will. Bitsi has been on our Web page for about a month now and if she is going to live then she MUST have surgery to correct her liver shunt. This is a surgery that is beyond what our regular vets can do so any and all discounts we get will not apply. We are told the surgery will be between $2500-$3000. A hit like that will devastate DFWPRC and we will not be able to continue to rescue other Pugs in need. Bitsi has been in our home and is currently taking medication that helps her appear to be normal but we are now starting to see a crack in that procedure. Our rescue vet says the medication will only help for a short period and the eventual out come will not be pretty. In other words Bitsi is DYING right in front of us. Now the begging part. If there are any of you that can send any amount all of it will be applied to Bitsi. Five hundred people send just $5 each and we are there. Please help us help Bitsi any amount you can spare will be appreciated very much. Thanks in advance from all of here at DFWPR and THANKS from Bitsi.

    SPECIAL NEEDS PUG NEEDS HELP

Hello everyone my name is Bitsi and I need a lot of help. I am only 2 and 1/2 years old and I have been diagnosed with a liver shunt. I belonged to a military family that could no longer care for me so i was given to DFWPRC. I am in a very loving foster home now with lots of other Pugs to play with. I do not feel ill or show any side effects so I am not sure what is going on. I saw a nice doctor on Friday that used a funny machine (ultra sound) to take pictures of my liver. They said that by Tuesday they would know what type of shunt that I have. They are all praying it is of the external variety so I will have a chance at a very expensive surgery so I can live to be an old Pug. If it is internal then how long I have on this Pugy earth is a huge question some say a year others say 5 or 6 years it is anyones guess. Reguardless of the type my treatment is going to cost a love of money. I know a lot of you give money all the time but if any of you can reach down and give a little more so I might have a chance at a semi normal life I would be very grateful. I know my chances of being adopted are slim but my foster mama said she would care for me. I love to play fetch and go for walks. Today I am just a normal Pug doing puggy things. Please help me be able to continue. have a blessed day.

    Bitsi.

    Update May 26, 2006

We have done about all the test that we can on Bitsi and the outlook is fuzzy. The results of her ultra sound did not show a shunt but the next test a bile acids test did. Dr Gumfory has conferred with a specialist and she told him that 90% of the shunts in Pugs are of the external variety and rarely show up on the test. This can be corrected by a surgery that will cost between $2100 & $2500. She would also have to have one other test done before surgery that runs about $400. If we choose to not do the surgery and just continue with medicine therapy then the specialist said she could live 1-4 years but would eventually give into the disease. Right now she is just a normal Pug girl who loves walks, fetch and oh yes EATING. We are open to suggestions from all you pug people. Either email the website or call the hotline @ 817-481-2004. Bitsi says thanks to everyone who has asked about her this past week.
